Maintenance, the core of our business

At anchor, in Taiohae Bay

The Marquesas are a stopover for many sailors from all over the world. 745 miles north-east of Tahiti, Nuku Hiva is often the first landfall after a long passage, sometimes 3,800 miles from Panama.

Taiohae Bay is wide and roomy, and night landfalls are easy. It is the ideal place to catch your breath, check the state of the boat and carry out the necessary work before heading west again.

We work on your boat, at anchor, whether you are passing through or staying longer. Our aim is simple: to let you continue your voyage safely and comfortably.

Inboard and outboard mechanics

Routine servicing and troubleshooting, fuel and cooling systems.

Work aloft

Navigation lights, VHF antenna, wind instrument, running halyards through the mast, rig inspection.

Rigging and ropework

Making and repairing lines. Making strops and soft attachments, high-performance rope (Dyneema).

Plumbing and watermakers

Fresh water and sea water: pressure pumps, pipework. Watermakers: troubleshooting, replacement, flushing and preservation.

Structure

Advice and repairs so that your hull can keep going. Hull maintenance for small local boats.

Windlass

Diagnostics, servicing and repairs.

Underwater maintenance

Anodes, propeller, hull, through-hulls: see our dedicated page.

Refrigeration

Refrigerant top-up, electrical and electronic diagnostics.

Parts, lead times and rates

Finding parts in French Polynesia, and even more so in the Marquesas, remains a challenge. If the part is available in Tahiti and is neither classed as dangerous goods nor too heavy, it usually arrives by air freight in less than a week. Otherwise, shipping from Europe or America can take several weeks. From March to July, in high season, our lead times can be longer. And if what you need is not on this page, ask anyway: we will try to find a suitable solution.

Frequently asked questions

What maintenance work do you do?

Preventive maintenance, diagnostics, electrical and mechanical repairs, work aloft, rigging and splicing, small fibreglass hull repairs, caulking, deck hardware replacement, windlasses, refrigeration, ultrasonic cleaning and underwater work.

Do you work at anchor?

Yes. Most of our work is done on board, at anchor in Taiohae Bay, as there is no dock in Taiohae where a yacht can stay.

Do you do antifouling?

Yes, but only for small local boats: yachts cannot be hauled out in Nuku Hiva.

Which electrical systems do you work on?

12 V, 24 V and 48 V, as well as 110 V and 230 V: diagnostics, rewiring, circuit protection, converters and inverters.

Do you install lithium batteries and solar panels?

Yes. For lithium: sizing, installation, BMS set-up and integration with the alternator, charger and solar. For solar: power study, fitting, wiring, protection, MPPT controllers and fine-tuning.

Do you work on navigation electronics?

Yes: VHF, AIS, GPS and chartplotter, depth sounder, aerials, autopilots and NMEA integration.

Which engines and brands do you work on?

Outboard and inboard engines: outboard fitting, servicing, overhauls, oil changes, diagnostics, parts replacement, tuning and testing. We work on Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda, Mercury, Tohatsu, Yanmar (partnership through Sin Tung Hing), Nanni Diesel, Volvo and other common brands. For heavy inboard work, we coordinate with partner workshops, in Tahiti if needed.

Do you repair watermakers and plumbing?

Yes. Watermakers: installation, commissioning, servicing, membrane replacement, diagnostics and repair. Plumbing: freshwater pumps, pressure sets, pipework, tanks, level sensors, valves, manual or electric marine toilets and outlets.

How do you get spare parts?

A part available in Tahiti usually arrives by air freight in about a week, unless it is classed as dangerous goods. Otherwise it has to come from Europe or America, which takes several weeks. We can receive your parcels: the reception rates are shown on this page.

Can you make a temporary repair so I can reach Tahiti?

Yes. We do not carry out full refits or major structural work in Nuku Hiva, but we do the repairs and temporary fixes that let your boat sail safely to a suitable yard, usually in Tahiti: engine, electrical circuits, pumps, watermaker, local reinforcement.
