Preparing your passage

Before heading west again, here is what we check with you.
What are the priorities before a long passage?

Check the engine and its cooling, test the electrics and batteries, check the fuel supply and filters, check the watermaker and drinking water, inspect the rigging and lines, test the navigation electronics and communications, check the safety equipment (liferaft, lifejackets, fire extinguishers) and get your paperwork and insurance ready. We offer a pre-departure check-up.

What should I check on the batteries before a passage?

State of charge, resting voltage, capacity if in doubt, the condition of connections and terminals, and that the charger, alternator and BMS work properly. If capacity is insufficient, we recommend replacing or upgrading them.

How should I prepare the fuel system for a long passage?

Check the fuel level and quality, replace the filters, drain water and sediment, check the pumps and fuel lines, and plan a safety reserve, in jerry cans if needed. We can do this servicing and advise you on quantities.

What if the watermaker is playing up before departure?

A full diagnosis: pre-filters, membranes, inlet pressure and pumps, with cartridges or membranes replaced if needed. We act quickly so that you keep your fresh water supply.

Which checks should I make on the rigging and sails before an ocean passage?

A visual inspection of the mast, halyards, stays, chainplates, blocks and winches; wear on the lines, the condition of the sails (seams, repairs), rig tension and the security of fittings. Temporary repairs are possible so that you can make the passage.

What should I check on the electronics and navigation before leaving?

Test the GPS and chartplotter, VHF, AIS, depth sounder, autopilot and backup power; check your charts and their updates; carry backup means (handheld GPS, EPIRB). We carry out diagnostics and installations.

Do you offer a pre-departure inspection?

Yes: an inspection before you sail, with a full checklist, engine tests, a check of the essential systems and our recommendations before departure.
